Meet The Light Observer

New in at our store - The Light Observer! It’s always nice to get to know the people and the message behind a magazine - so today we share an interview with Hugo, one of the creatives behind this biannual magazine based in Milan. They aim to explore light in all of its forms though articles and interviews by both established and emerging artists, photographers, architects, scientists and designers. Read on for more about the magazine, features and their favorite places in Milan.

Congratulations on your first issue! What was the path to/inspiration behind starting your magazine?

Thanks! Our idea was to explore a theme that would allow us to address a wide range of topics, within the same magazine. We find Light was the perfect subject to investigate. It's very interesting how everyone has a different approach and relationship to it.

Can you tell us a little about 2 or 3 of the articles that particularly stand out to you?

We have been lucky to have great collaborators for our very first issue. We're proud to have an artist such as Nathalie Du Pasquier doing for us a series of drawings. Her humour, acute sense of shape and colour make this collection very distinctive and recognizable. Adi Haxhiaj, a young artist based in Milan also created an artwork especially for the magazine. The interview with Rosa Barba was great to do and I believe gives an interesting perspective on her work and philosophy. We're also very happy to have been able to present a project from photographer Guillaume Simoneau, for the first time published.

Who is your reader?

Someone curious. Someone interested in a lot of things, willing to learn more about architecture, cinema, discover artists, photographers, read compelling and inspiring stories.

Do you have advice for other creatives as they start their own projects/businesses?

If you're firmly convinced about something you will eventually find a way to make it. It's just a question of time and resolution. Obviously, you have to be passionate about it and put great care in everything you do.

A little extra: Where are you based and can you recommend some of your favorite places to eat/dance/drink or shop in your area? Or can you recommend other interesting projects from your community?

We're based in Milan. These days are not the right time to visit I'm afraid! But Triennale is always doing interesting exhibitions and events, Vinodromo is a good place to drink good wine and eat well and Macao is organizing great parties and lots of events in general. Also, Reading Room is a great place to discover and buy magazines in town.
