Interview w/ DRÜ EGG

At first sight I loved the t-shirt and skate deck designs by Dominik Rüeg, the illustrator/animator/muralist behind St. Gallen based DRÜ EGG. You can purchase his Island Character T-Shirt here. I sent a few questions for him, enjoy!

What inspired you to create DRÜ EGG?

I started screen printing with friends when I was 16 years old at our local art school. So I always liked to wear my own designs or see people walking around with a shirt of mine.

LaterI supervised a screen printing studio for young people, so I still had the opportunity to print my own shirts. At the moment I’m working as an Illustrator and Designer and need to have my own side projects. Now i don’t print them by myself. That gives me more time to work on the designs and a good screen printer is still 10 times faster and cleaner than me - so it makes more sense to let them do the production.

What is inspiring you?

My Inspiration stems from daily impressions of the surroundings where I live and where I travel. I always walk around with open eyes.

What advice would you give to creatives who want to start their own business or creative project?

Just start it small, you will „grow“ in your own business. Don’t think too much about it and don’t just stay at home and wait until a cool project is coming to you.

And it’s always good if you have someone who helps you with things you are not good in.

Would love to know about the design on the t-shirt/the story behind it?

Most of my shirts are projects or sketches that I do just for fun or tests. When I really like them I start to think about producing them as a Shirt or something else. That’s why I don’t have some season drops, my stuff just comes out when I have a new design that I like.

The Island-Character is a bit of a return to when I start painting my landscape-style because at the beginning there was always a character in the landscapes, so i decided to sketch something like that again. The Digital Playground T-Shirt was actually one of many tests to work with AR and i really liked it, so i used it as a shirt.

A little extra: What are a few of your favorite spots in your city (St. Gallen) for drinks/music/food/entertainment, etc…

Haus zu Ameise - Its my Studio and as well a small exhibition place. I always really like to meet our friends there and have some good evenings.

Perron Nord - Super cozy and the best Cordon Bleu in Town. (friendliest staff ever)

Palace - Best Place for Concerts (we also organize some Artist talks there…)

Drei Weihern - it’s the Place to be during Summer. You can swim there for free and you have a beautiful view over the city

Home sweet Home - That’s my feel good zone. I really love our flat and especially the terasse.
